What’s in My Grocery Bags (#7)

in Other

Happy Sunday!  I hope your weekend has been great so far.  I had a pretty busy work week, so I am enjoying kicking back and relaxing (for the most part) this weekend.  Sometimes you just need those “lazy” weekends.

My last grocery haul post was all the way back in the beginning of March.  But don’t worry.  I’ve been grocery shopping a few times since then!  It’s about time I share a peek into my grocery bags again, don’t you think?  I’m mixing things up a little today by showing you what I purchased and how much I paid for each item.  I’m going to warn you ahead of time… it was not a cheap week.  At all.  Someday I swear I am going to get this grocery budget thing under control.

*I am toying around with the idea of trying grain-free and would, therefore, have to say bye-bye to my beloved Vega One.  I am going to try this protein powder out to see if I like it.  I sure hope that I do, because if I make the transition to grain-free, I am still going to need my smoothies!

Grocery Bags 2Cage-free Large Brown Eggs- $3.19 (Whole Foods)
Sprouted Corn Tortillas- $3.19 (Whole Foods)
Organic Coconut Milk- $3.99 (Whole Foods)
Almond Milk- $3.69 (Whole Foods)

Grocery Bags Sam's ClubBananas-$1.36 (Sam’s Club)
2 LB Organic Kale Medley- $3.98 (Sam’s Club)
2 LB Organic Spinach- $3.22 (Sam’s Club)
Super bright toenails… priceless?

If you were following along, I shopped at four (yes four!) grocery stores and spent a total of $114.93 (after $9.19 in coupons).  This was definitely not a “typical” week for me.  I generally spend around $85 to $90.  This week, however, I was stocking up on quite a few pricey products that I only buy now-and then (protein powder, nut butters, hemp hearts, acai packs, etc.).  Let’s hope next week’s grocery bill is a bit more reasonable 😉

What did you buy this weekend at the grocery store?
Did you splurge on anything special?

Have you tried Skoop? I am obsessed and I never liked or used protein powders! I think it's grain free? Don't hold me to it, but it's soy, dairy and gluten free - completely plant based. I think you would really like it! meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles recently posted...Will I Run The LI Half & Workout RecapMy Profile

I have heard of Skoop, but I haven't looked into whether or not it is grain-free or not. I'll have to do that! Thanks for the reminder :)

So I just checked... and it looks like it contains brown rice protein. So that's a no go :(

I hope you have more than 2 potatoes in you life :O
    • ClnEatingVegGrl April 19, 2015, 10:29 am
Haha!! I normally only buy a couple each week because they tend to go bad so quickly. Nobody likes a rotten potato :(

I am totally with you on the fresh melon for spring - though jealous of those prices! I know it seems like a lot, but Manhattan is even more expensive (and there's no TJ's near me, sad times...) Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl recently posted...New and Improved Renaissance Runner GirlMy Profile

Oh my gosh, I bet!! I have been to Manhattan a few times and I definitely understand how inflated the prices are. Even just eating out at a chain restaurant costs more than it would here!

I love all the variety! Right now we are on a pretty tight budget ($40/week for two of us), so while I am able to make creative and healthy meals, we lack variety! I can't wait to be out of grad school, so I can use your pointers. I will say though, skipping on meat saves a ton. Kate recently posted...A few current favoritesMy Profile

Wow, that is impressive!! I'm lucky if I only spend that much at one store ;)
  • Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola April 19, 2015, 2:52 pm
I spent $75 at the local butcher. Meat is so much cheaper there, especially the ground beef, and I think the quality is better as well. I mostly froze everything and hopefully it all will last for the next 4-6 weeks. Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola recently posted...Knee Surgery: Week 6 UpdateMy Profile

Buying in bulk is HUGE!! I definitely need to start doing that more often. Now if only I had a giant freezer. That'd make it a lot easier!

Mmm I want those kale chips! What a fun post!
    • ClnEatingVegGrl April 19, 2015, 7:11 pm
Thanks Erin! I have tried some of their other flavors, but haven't tried the kool ranch flavor yet. I'll let you know how they are!

You are giving me such good ideas on stuff I should look into buying!! This all looks delicious and I can't wait to see what you make with it all!

That's so funny! I don't ever eat them by themselves, just throw 'em in recipes and salads. You must be a MAJOR cherry tomato lover ;)

You're in Luck because new Vega One is actually totally grain-free!! It does have pea protein though, so some people who are doing the primal/paleo thing don't like to eat peas. So it's Pea, saviseed, flax and hemp protein with a little boost from spirulina. Here's a link with more info, but shoot me an email if you have any more questions about the whole grain-free thing! http://myvega.com/vega-life/vega-blog/plant-based-paleo/ Trevor E recently posted...A Letter to a Broken Mind and BodyMy Profile

Oh my goodness, Trevor. You just 100% MADE my day!! I was looking at an older canister of my protein powder and saw the brown rice protein. I should have thought to look at the newer container too! Quick question... I did notice on the website that the protein smoothie powders still contain brown rice protein. Any idea if they are planning to switch those to grain-free also? I'm obsessed with the Choc-A-Lot flavor :D
      • Trevor E April 20, 2015, 2:16 pm
Yay! This was such a great change for me too, because I'm not having brown rice protein anymore. Right now it's just Vega One, but trust us, our innovation team is looking at all of our formulas. Grain free is so huge right now, and rightfully so. I know they are looking at it, but I can't confirm for sure what the status on protein smoothie is. Will definitely let you know as soon as I find out though. I think I might have sent you a tub of our Sport Protein this week, which does have brown rice protein, but maybe you can trade it with a buddy for some Vega One :) Trevor E recently posted...A Letter to a Broken Mind and BodyMy Profile

my grocery bill is around that too...and some weeks are just pricier than the others (esp with nut butters, seeds, protein, and meat for me). i usually goto 2 grocery stores too which is a hassle but i save some $$ here and there :) Dixya @ Food, Pleasure, and Health recently posted...What I Learned from my Yearly Physical? My Profile

That makes me feel better! ;) And yes... going to multiple stores is a pain, but it is a money saver!
  • Adriel April 25, 2015, 11:02 pm
I hate when the pricier items all have to be replaced at once!
    • ClnEatingVegGrl April 26, 2015, 9:25 am
It always seems to work out that way now doesn't it? Such a bummer!
