Cinnamon Turmeric Sweet Potato Fries

in Sides, Snacks

Flavorful, crispy Cinnamon Turmeric Sweet Potato Fries that are both vegan and anti-inflammatory.  Pair these with your favorite (veggie) burger, or just dip ’em in ketchup for a snack!

turmeric sweet potato fries 3I like vegetables… a lot.  I’m sure you never would have guessed that by the title of this blog!

turmeric sweet potato fries 6There are really only a few vegetables that I don’t love– fennel (helllo black licorice), eggplant (I used to love it, but for some reason it turns me off now), and cucumbers (they taste like nothing when eaten on their own).  That leaves roughly 368 other vegetables that I love, give or take a few.

Since I have a love for so many vegetables, it is pretty  tough for me to narrow down my favorites to a top three.  Heck, even a top five is pushing it.  But if I was given that prompt, you can almost bet that sweet potatoes would be on that list!  Along with carrots, I am sweet potato obsessed.  I will surely never have a deficiency in beta-carotene!

turmeric sweet potato fries 8Plain baked sweet potatoes, sweet potato nachos, sweet potatoes topped with nut butter, sweet potato chips… you name it, I love it.  But my absolute favorite way to eat sweet potatoes is as french fries, especially when dipped in ketchup or mustard!

turmeric sweet potato fries 2You cannot go wrong with salt and pepper on sweet potato fries, but lately I have been loving my anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich version.  I am all about cinnamon and turmeric right now.  The more the better!  So anytime that I can sneak it into my foods, I roll with it.  It turns out that the two make for a tasty combination on these fries.

turmeric sweet potato fries 7Cinnamon Turmeric Sweet Potatoes Fries
Vegan, Gluten-Free + Anti-Inflammatory

Serves 2 (or 1 very hungry girl)

Ingredients

cooking spray
1 large sweet potato, washed well and dried
2 TB extra virgin olive oil or melted coconut oil
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground turmeric
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
1/4 tsp black pepper

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.  Spray with cooking spray.  I do not recommend using a silicone baking sheet, as the turmeric will stain it (and your hands) yellow.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

2. Cut potato into wedges or strips.  Place into a large bowl.

3. Add oil and spices to the bowl.  Using a large spoon or tongs, toss potato wedges with oil and spices until evenly coated.

4. Place potato wedges onto baking sheet.  Bake for approximately 15 minutes, flip, and bake an additional 10 minutes.

turmeric sweet potato fries 5Perfectly seasoned and almost perfectly crispy.  No matter how hard I try, I don’t think baked sweet potato fries will ever be as good as potatoes that are actually fried.  Does anyone have any tips or tricks they want to share?

turmeric sweet potato fries 9Even if they are not restaurant crispy, these will make you say, “nom, nom, nom!”

I loooove sweet potatoes, but they rarely make it home with me from the grocery store. Somehow, they always go bad in like 2 days (while regular potatoes seem to last a life time!), so they end up wasted. Homemade sweet potato fries, especiallllly with cinnamon, seem worth making a special trip to grab a sweet potato on my way home Kelly @ Hidden Fruits and Veggies recently posted...Whole Wheat Spinach BreadMy Profile

I think so too! ;) I do agree, though. My sweet potatoes tend to go back more frequently than my regular potatoes. I always try to use up my sweet potatoes within a few days of buying them in order to prevent that.
  • Jessie February 24, 2015, 7:21 am
Turmeric is one spice that I rarely use. In fact, i'm not sure I've ever used it in a recipe. I love your blue bin that you have the sweet potatoes in. So rustic!
    • ClnEatingVegGrl February 24, 2015, 10:07 am
Oh you definitely need to start cooking with turmeric! Not only is it yummy and good for you, but it gives everything a pretty golden hue :)

  • Monica February 24, 2015, 9:52 am
I love them too but they must be crispy. I learned from Katie at Chocolate covered Katie.com that the key to this is cut them up them soak them in water them for at least 45 min. prior to baking--it works!
    • ClnEatingVegGrl February 24, 2015, 10:11 am
Huh! Maybe I'll have to try that! I always heard that this works for regular potatoes but not sweet potatoes. Have you tried it with sweet potatoes too?

I love sweet potato fries and the water soak works for crisping up also turmeric is awesome for pain and several others . We are using it more and more. It does make the sweet potato fries prettier to. I also love fennel as you posted above. People need to try more veggie options I think they would be pleasantly surprised.

I LOVE the gorgeous orange/gold hue that turmeric gives to food. Turmeric quinoa and rice are both favorites of mine right now too!

Funny, I am the opposite of you with eggplant - I used to hate it but recently I've started to love it. Sweet potatoes and all things orange are big time favorites of mine, AND I try to eat an anti-inflammatory diet so this recipe looks heavenly! I try to get turmeric into my diet wherever I can so I'll be trying this out soon. Thanks for sharing!

I baked mine for about an hour at 300 wrapped in aluminum foil....then mixed your ingredients using FRESHLY GRATED turmeric, freshly ground Himalayan salt (aobut 1/4 tsp), ground peper, 1/8 tspn of raw unpastuerized honey and made sweet potato masked potato (redundancy seems important in this case lol) Delish!!! And thanks for your website!! :)
