Iowa City Eats: Hamburg Inn No. 2

in Other, Restaurant Reviews

Last night, the boyfriend and I traveled to Iowa City to catch an Iowa volleyball game which may be available for wagering on platforms such as 벳엔드.  I have played volleyball since 3rd grade and LOVE the sport.  Being at the game sure made me miss playing.  Before we headed to the game we decided to check out a well-known restaurant in Iowa City to see what it was all about.  A delicious dining experience was to be had at Hamburg Inn No. 2!

Hamburg Inn No. 2 opened in 1948 and as “one of Iowa’s most famous restaurants, was featured in the Washington Post‘s “Great American Hamburger Debate,” National Public Radio‘s “All Things Considered” and Susan Stramburg’s “Every Night at Five.” The Quad City Times called us “[…] a piece of Americana.” It was a film location for the movie “Zadar, Cow from Hell” (www.hamburginn.com).  Three presidents (Reagan, Clinton, and Obama) have all dined at Hamburg Inn No. 2.  I hear that the restaurant is nearly always busy and is especially well-known for their breakfast, which is served all day.  They say you may wait for quite some time when trying to get a table on a Sunday morning.  The restaurant is quite quaint and features a diner-esque decor.  And the food?….DELICIOUS!

The menu features many vegetarian options, which always impresses me.  There is nothing I dislike more than going to a restaurant and only having one option or only being able to order a salad.  That was certainly not the case at Hamburg Inn No. 2.  I decided to branch out and order something out of the ordinary for me: the Veggie BLT.  This sandwich features vegetarian bacon (I suspect it is MorningStar Farms brand), lettuce, tomato, and perfectly toasted wheat bread.  I topped my sandwich with mustard.  The majority of the sandwiches, burgers, and dinners come with your choice of two sides.  I chose a side salad w/ tomatoes and onions with balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side:

and sweet potato fries.  Generally, I try to avoid ordering fries at restaurants, but I am a sucker for sweet potato fries and hey, you have to indulge every once in a while! 😉  These crispy fries were SOO worth it too!

As a meat-eater, I was never much of a bacon fan.  However, this veggie bacon was delicious!  It certainly does not look the most appetizing, but it was crispy, crunchy, and tasted like bacon..my bacon-loving boyfriend agreed!

The “bacon” was so good that I plan to go buy some MorningStar Farms veggie bacon this afternoon to recreate the sandwich for dinner tonight.  I’m just a little excited!

Lastly, for you meat-loving readers out there, I give you my boyfriend’s meal:

The smothered onion BBQ burger.  Now that is a burger.  Am I right? 😉  The fries tasted just as good at they look.

Hamburg Inn No. 2 can certainly count on my return in the near future.
