WIAW: New-To-Me Foods + A Call for Posts!

Today’s What I Ate Wednesday post is going to be a bit out of the ordinary.  Instead of chronicling my eats for an entire day, I am going to give you a little peek into some new foods that I have tried over the past couple of weeks.  Maybe you will learn about a new product, and maybe you will end up getting hooked on some of these new-to-me- foods just like I have!

What I Ate Wednesday Lately: New-To-Me Foods

I have quite an obsession with cooked frozen peas.  You have likely seen them pop up in numerous WIAW posts, especially on my veggie snacks plates.  Yes, I eat peas for snacks.  Well, it turns out that I not only like them in their natural form, but I also LOVE them baked.  These lightly salted Snapea Crisps are delicious!  The ingredient list is pretty great, the nutritional facts are fabulous, and they contain a great serving of protein.  I love the simple lightly salted flavor (especially because it means that they are plant-based), but there are also other flavors including caesar, wasabi ranch, and black pepper.  I really want to try the black pepper flavor next!  I found these at my local grocery store and have also seen them at Whole Foods.

Many people who see this probably think, “what is that?”  Well, the only reason why I knew what it was is because I used to work in a grocery store.  This is jicama, which is a Mexican “potato.”  And if you stopped by the blog yesterday, you know that it is quite delicious roasted.  I have heard that it can be eaten raw, but I have yet to go that route just yet.  Maybe next time!  Oh, and I also used these in a breakfast hash, which I will be posting about later on!

Oh my gosh, you guyssss.  This cereal is GOOD!  I have always been a fan of Chex cereal, but when I heard that they were introducing a vanilla flavor I was a bit (maybe overly?) excited.  And let me just say, I was not disappointed one bit when I took my first bite of this.  I have been adding it to my cereal bowl mixtures in the morning and it is the perfect sweet addition.  This is a MUST try.

Last week I was this close to buying my usual weekly cantaloupe.  But then something else caught my eye.  I saw that the golden honeydew melons were on sale so I decided I would branch out and give them a try.  I would say that they are a bit of a cross between a cantaloupe and a honeydew melon, with a white/yellow color to them.  Well, guess what?  I did not love it.  At first I thought that it was pretty good, but the more that I tried to eat it the more I did not really like it.  Maybe it is because my taste buds wanted to just taste either a cantaloupe or a honeydew melon, but not the cross between both.  That being said, I only made it through about half of the melon before it hit the trash can.  I just couldn’t do it :(.

I may not have liked the golden honeydew melon, but this is one fruit that I am really loving.  I tried a Divine apple for the first time this past weekend.  Has anyone else ever eaten one of these?  It is a sweeter apple and I really enjoyed it.  I am sure that it didn’t hurt that I paired it with some White Chocolate Wonderful peanut butter ;).

And finally…

These bad boys!  I won a giveaway over at Erin’s blog for Enlightened ice cream bars.  They come in fudge, coffee, and orange cream flavors.  I thought that the company might send me a box of each flavor, but they sent me THREE boxes of each flavor!  My co-workers are going to be super happy when I bring these in to work tomorrow for an afternoon treat.  For me, the orange cream flavor is where it’s at!

So this may not have been a post about everything that I ate in one day (and that is probably a good thing because that would be a weird combination ;)), but hopefully you found some new products and produce to buy and try the next time that you hit up the grocery store.

A Call for Posts

And finally, to end this very wordy post…

I need your help!  I took a “blogcation” back in April and it was so physically and mentally refreshing for me.  As a result, I have decided that I will be taking a blogging vacation about two to three times per year.  So…it is about that time again!  I will be taking my blogcation the week of August 12th.  But I don’t want you all to be without some great reading material.  Therefore, I would love to invite you to be a guest blogger on my page during that week.  I am pretty open to any topic that is related to healthy living (food, recipes, fitness, body image, etc.).  Or, if you have another idea, please run it by me!  If interested in doing a guest post on this blog, please contact me at cleaneatingveggiegirl@gmail.com  I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

  • Marie @ Little Kitchie July 24, 2013, 7:57 am
I keep hearing about those snap pea crisps! Need to try!!
  • Her Happy Balance July 24, 2013, 7:58 am
So I have a confession, I have never actually had Chex cereal in its true form. I always have it in the form of delicious muddy buddies haha! But perhaps because a vanilla version exists, I can refrain from smothering the cereal in peanut butter and chocolate now :)
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:51 pm
Muddy buddies (or what I call Puppy Chow) is AWESOME! I bet that using the vanilla version would make for some tasty puppy chow!
  • saltedplates July 24, 2013, 8:04 am
I had diced jicama in a salad with tomato and cucumbers at an event that was divine! I don't see it around here often or I would be making it all the time
  • swissfitchick July 24, 2013, 9:04 am
I was about to by the Snap pea crisps when I was in the US but I didn't and now I regret it! And I am sure that Ice Cream is a winner - especially now in summer!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:53 pm
Aww, what a bummer! They are quite good! But I am sure that you already had tons of new-to-you products that you were wanting to try!
  • dailycupofkate July 24, 2013, 9:31 am
    I love snapea crisps!!
  • ahealthyhappyhome July 24, 2013, 9:34 am
I've been seeing those snapea crips around and thinking about getting some for my son. Do they have added sugar? corn? I'll have to keep my eye out for them. They seem to be pretty popular!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:53 pm
They are yummy! I do not believe that they have any added sugar, but I am fairly certain that they are made with corn oil.
  • chasingchels July 24, 2013, 9:39 am
Oh vanilla chex...it is now a staple in our house :)
  • Tiff @ Love Sweat & Beers July 24, 2013, 9:45 am
I love the blogcation idea! Bummer about the melon... ahhhh, the risk of branching out! haha
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:54 pm
Yes, most of my risks (especially with produce) normally always pay off, but this time it didn't :(.
  • Ani D July 24, 2013, 9:50 am
I just tried vanilla chex the other week! It is DELICIOUS. A little sweet all my itself, but I love mixing it my yogurt and cottage cheese for some sweetness and crunch!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:55 pm
Yes, it is definitely sweet, but it is the perfect addition to my cereal bowl of 2-3 other cereals. I love mixing them!
  • Alex @ therunwithin July 24, 2013, 11:07 am
oh gosh those enlightened bars look amazingggggg
  • Brittany July 24, 2013, 11:33 am
I am obsessed with snap peas, I will eat an entire bag in one sitting. The Costco sized bags are DANGEROUS! I love the idea of the blogvacation..I will think about that...
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:57 pm
Oh my. I can only imagine how dangerous those giant bags are! It takes all that I have to portion it out into a "serving size" otherwise I would definitely eat the whole bag!
  • Marisa @ Uproot from Oregon July 24, 2013, 11:35 am
I looove snap pea crisps, and I have seen that vanilla chex everywhere. I will have to check it out as I am a cereal fanatic to say the least. I emailed you about guest posting- would love to share one of my healthy recipes with your followers!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 7:57 pm
Awesome! I will be replying to my e-mails within the next couple of days. And yes, you MUST try the vanilla Chex. They are SO good!
  • Kelly @ hidden fruits and veggies July 24, 2013, 11:44 am
Glad I'm not the only one that gets REALLY excited about new cereal flavors! I hadn't heard of that, but now I neeeeds it.
  • Khushboo Thadani (@KhushbooThadani) July 24, 2013, 12:11 pm
I can't believe you just posted about those pea chips- my friend just gave me a packet as she recently arrived from the US! I was a bit skeptical at first glance but glad to hear they are yum!
  • Dixya @ Food, Pleasure, and Health July 24, 2013, 12:21 pm
next time im getting those snap pea crisps :)
  • Ashley July 24, 2013, 12:39 pm
I ate chex cereal religiously when I was in college. And when I was a kid : ) I had no idea they came out with a vanilla flavor!? Must try this!
  • Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen July 24, 2013, 12:59 pm
Vanilla chex cereal looks good! I just tried Puffins and am really liking it. Cereal is always a classic!
  • Eating 4 Balance July 24, 2013, 1:58 pm
I bet that chex cereal is amazing. It's like a milder version of puppy chow... without the chocolate... and in a bowl. Breakfast at its finest :) I think that's a great idea to take a planned blogcation. I can't wait to see who you get for guest posters!
  • olivesanwine July 24, 2013, 2:52 pm
Those Snap Peas are freakin' amazing. I may have eaten the entire bag on the way home from TJ's when I bought them... ;)
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 8:01 pm
Haha, aren't they awesome and SO addicting? It is a good thing that the bag isn't super big ;).
  • elizabethgardenkitchen July 24, 2013, 4:07 pm
Jicama is great raw! You can mince it and use it as an alternative to cous couse or rice under a main course. I also get bummed out by disappointing produce. But, I have discovered that you can cut it up and put it in a smoothie with a bunch of fruits and proteins you do like and that almost completely gets rid of weird flavors or textures. And you don't have to waste it - also works for fruits and veggies a little past their prime!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 24, 2013, 8:02 pm
Great ideas! I especially love the idea of using jicama in place of rice. I love cauliflower "rice" so I bet that I would really like jicama "rice" too!
  • Kathy @ Olives and Garlic July 24, 2013, 5:48 pm
Those snap pea crisps are so good. I'm so glad my hubby and daughter don't like them, more for me. :) I've never tried jicama.
  • Erin (@girlgoneveggie) July 24, 2013, 7:51 pm
That is so sweet of you to share the ice cream with your co-workers! I hope they enjoy it!
  • katalysthealth July 24, 2013, 8:35 pm
Mmm those ice cream bars sound PERFECT! Id be all over the coffee flavor :):) And the blogcation is SUCH a great idea!!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 25, 2013, 7:13 am
It definitely does not seem like coffee flavors are found in ice cream treats very often, so that's pretty cool!
  • Brittany @ Freckled Nettles July 24, 2013, 8:53 pm
Ugh, apples + White Chocolate Wonderful = bliss. I'm glad you discovered it, love!! <3
  • Nicole @ FruitnFitness July 24, 2013, 9:04 pm
I havent tried the vanilla chex yet but I love the regular and chocolate ones! I had jicama as my pre dinner appetizer tonight. I didn't know it was a type of potato
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 25, 2013, 7:14 am
Chocolate Chex is awesome! You should definitely try the vanilla. I bet combining the chocolate and vanilla flavors would be awesome!
  • Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl July 25, 2013, 6:45 am
So funny that we both posted about the vanilla chex for WIAW!!! Great minds think alike, I guess! ;) I'm going to be on the lookout for Divine apples now. You know how much of a fan of apples I am and I haven't tasted a Divine.
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 25, 2013, 7:14 am
Yes, we are definitely on the same wavelength when it comes to food. We clearly have awesome taste in food! ;)
  • rebacox July 25, 2013, 8:12 am
I love jicama. So yummy I have never roasted it though. I hear you about blogcations!
  • makingthymeforhealth July 25, 2013, 12:30 pm
I'm a pea lover too so I need to look for those pea crisps! They sound good. And I need to look for a jicama too. I love how experimental you are with veggies. You inspire me to try new ones!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 25, 2013, 2:25 pm
I am glad to hear that!! I LOVE trying new veggies, which is so funny to me because I used to be super picky about my food.
  • Angela @ Another Bite Please July 25, 2013, 12:59 pm
jicama....i had that once in a really good citrus type salad and it was sooo good. reminds me that I had wanted to tr to recreate that dish. good for you on taking a blogcation. i feel like i have all summer...i wish i could help you out but i am being such a slacker with my own blog...i would hate to disappoint you!
  • Alyssa @ Road to RD July 25, 2013, 2:22 pm
Mmm I've been seeing those Vanilla Chex around and if they're as any good as the chocolate, I'll be all over them!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 25, 2013, 2:26 pm
I haven't tried the chocolate (silly me!), but I have a feeling that mixing both the vanilla and the chocolate in one bowl would be amazing!
  • lifeaslisaknowsit July 25, 2013, 3:48 pm
I just bought those snapea crisps last weekend but haven't tried them yet... that might change tonight! :-)
  • Christine @ 24 Carrot Kitchen July 25, 2013, 7:25 pm
I have never had jicama and it looks really good. I have had the Pea Crisps and they are a great alternative to chips. I always like trying new ice cream.
  • Alexis @ Hummusapien July 25, 2013, 9:01 pm
OMG I seriously want to try everything on this page! I got the Trader Joe's version of those snap pea crisps recently and I was obsessed. I could have easily eaten the entire bag in one sitting!! Those divine apples and the ice cream bars look super delish as well--never tried either of those!
  • ashley July 26, 2013, 1:13 am
I've had that cereal, and yes - it's awesome!! Blogvations are a smart idea..I should try it sometime!
  • Em @ Love A Latte July 26, 2013, 10:19 am

  • Ttrockwood July 26, 2013, 3:24 pm
I love jicama!! I have actually only eaten it raw- really great crispy texture, i like to dip in hummus or add it to salads
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 26, 2013, 3:59 pm
I REALLY need to try it raw. I have heard from so many people that it is really good that way.
