Roasted Part 10: Jicama Chips

jicama chips 2

Lately, I have been a veggie roasting fool.  Or maybe a veggie roasting smartie, since obviously roasting vegetables is the way to go! 😉  It was just last week that I posted my ninth edition of my “Roasted” Series.  But, I am back at it again with another “Roasted” post.  And this time, it is featuring a vegetable that I tried for the first time this past week.

After having worked in a grocery store for over eight years, I had seen jicama on numerous occasions.  I had never been brave enough to buy it, though, partly because I was not sure how to cook it.  So when I saw this veggie on sale at the grocery store last weekend I decided that I needed to quit avoiding it and start eating it.  And, as always, my go-to cooking method for any vegetable that I am not familiar with came into play: the roasting method!

Roasted Jicama Chips

Servings: 1 to 2

Ingredients

olive oil cooking spray
1 medium-sized jicama
fine sea salt
black pepper
garlic powder
onion powder
chili powder (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Line a large baking sheet with foil and spray with olive oil cooking spray.

2. Cut jicama into equal-sized wedges or “chips.”  Place the jicama on the baking sheet, spray it with olive oil cooking spray, and sprinkle it with the seasonings.

3. Roast the jicama chips for 15 to 20 minutes.  Flip the chips over and continue roasting for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

4. Serve the jicama chips with your favorite condiment(s).  I chose yellow mustard and ketchup (mixed together, of course)!

I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of these chips.  Jicama is referred to as a “Mexican potato,” so these definitely tasted similar to fries or chips made from white potatoes.  The taste has a slight hint of bitterness, but overall the bitterness disappears greatly with the roasting process.  The texture of the jicama is definitely crunchy, too.  It is crunchier than the texture of a potato, but it provides a nice bite and crispness that is associated with traditional potato chips.  I cut my chips more into wedges, but slicing them thinner into the form of traditional potato chips may result in them tasting even more like chips.  Experiment with them!  Honestly, you really cannot go wrong when it comes to roasting.

  • Her Happy Balance July 23, 2013, 9:05 am
Girl, no foolin' you roast everything under the sun :) Haha! I have heard of jicama before, and I'm fairly sure I've eaten it, but I've never seen what it looks like whole! Kind of looks like a potato...is it similar in taste?
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 3:37 pm
It is definitely similar in taste, but it has a little bit more of a bitter taste to it. This bitter taste almost completely disappears with the roasting process, though.

    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 3:38 pm
I definitely need to try it in its raw form since it seems like that is how most people eat it.
  • Emily July 23, 2013, 9:19 am
I have actually only had raw jicama on a veggie platter before... it is delish dipped in hummus! Never thought of cooking it, now I know!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 3:39 pm
I cannot wait to try it raw and with hummus! I pretty much like any veggie when it is dipped in hummus ;).
  • carlyjg July 23, 2013, 9:24 am
Okay, I've had raw jicama sticks, but I never would have thought to roast it. These need to jump off the screen and into my face.

I LOVE Jicama - too bad my college town grocery stores don't seem to carry it :( I usually have some when I go home over breaks though. These sound great
  • Kelly @ hidden fruits and veggies July 23, 2013, 9:47 am
I've never actually tried jicama. I bought it once, but couldnt figure out what to do with it before it went bad (which was an embarassingly long time). I have to try this.
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 3:41 pm
Whenever I don't know what to do with a veggie I always try roasting it. It hasn't failed me yet!

  • Nicole @ FruitnFitness July 23, 2013, 1:52 pm
Oh I just tried jicama for the first time this week after seeing it at the big grocery store on Sunday. I am a big fan! I'm hoping to pick up more when I do my kabocha restocking this weekend.

    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 7:28 pm
I LOVE trying new foods, which is so strange to type because I used to be such a picky eater!
  • Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen July 23, 2013, 5:13 pm
I LOVE jicama, but I have only ever had it raw, occasionally with a squeeze of lime juice and a dash of chili powder--so refreshing! Now that I've seen a few bloggers cook with it, I'm definitely curious to see what it tastes like when it is roasted. I think I'll have a to wait a little longer until my (lack of wisdom) teeth are ready for it. :)
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 7:29 pm
Aww, you poor thing! But yes, you need to try it roasted! Waiting a couple of weeks might be a good idea, though, since it definitely has a crunchy texture.
  • Oh My Veggies (@ohmyveggies) July 23, 2013, 7:05 pm
Okay, shamefully, I have tried jicama exactly once. Raw. And I was on the fence about it. Now I'm going to have to try it roasted!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 7:29 pm
Oh, you definitely need to try it roasted then. I think that roasting makes every vegetable tastes 10 times better!
  • Angela @ Health's Angel July 23, 2013, 7:41 pm
Jicama became kind of an odd inside joke between my roommates and me during senior year of college. We just thought the same was hilarious, for some reason. Ha. I actually just had a salad with jicama on it at a restaurant. It was good but the pieces were so small. I may need to experiment with this!
  • dailycupofkate July 23, 2013, 8:03 pm
You are inspiring me to try jicama! I have always wanted to but have been scared of it for some reason. Oh and by the way just roasted radishes last night and they were AWESOME.
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl July 23, 2013, 8:19 pm
Don't be scared! I think that you will definitely like it, especially if you like the roasted radishes! I am glad that you tried them!
  • ahealthyhappyhome July 23, 2013, 10:12 pm
I almost bought Jicama the other day because I saw a recipe that used two slices baked as bread for a burger. I've only ever tried it when I was teaching at a largely populated hispanic school with lime and chili powder. A mexican snack food!
  • ashley July 24, 2013, 12:33 am
I have never had jicama!! Crazy, right?! I agree that roasted veggies the way to go :)

Supes late to the commenting game, but I've never even heard of jimca. I wonder if it has more health benefits than a regular potato? Hm! Thanks for sharing!
