Maybe it is a result of nostalgia, but there is just something so comforting and cozy about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  I suppose that they remind me of my childhood and of home.  As a result, the PB & J sandwich has been making many appearances on my plate, as of lately.  You may remember my post for a Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich from a few months back.  Well, this time, I decided to make a more “adult” version of the classic sandwich and make a Sweet and Savory Grilled PB & J using two special ingredients: chickpeas and grapes!  Yes, you read that right.  Now, now…don’t knock it until you try it!

Sweet and Savory Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Servings: Makes 1 sandwich

Ingredients

olive oil cooking spray
1/3 of a 15 oz can of chickpeas, drained, rinsed, and dried (I actually roasted the whole can and ate the rest for snacks)
4 large red or black seedless grapes, sliced
sea salt
black pepper
2 pieces whole wheat bread
coconut oil
2 to 3 TB peanut butter
2 TB jelly or jam (I used blackberry jam)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.  Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray.

2. Place chickpeas and sliced grapes onto the baking sheet.  Spray with olive oil spray and sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper.

3. Roast the chickpeas and grapes for approximately 20 minutes.  Remove the grapes from the baking sheet and continue roasting the chickpeas for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until crispy.

4. Preheat a skillet or griddle pan over medium heat.  Spray with cooking spray.  Spread one slice of bread with coconut oil and place onto the griddle with the coconut oil side facing down.

5. Top the first piece of bread with peanut butter and chickpeas.

6. Top the peanut butter and chickpeas with roasted grapes.  My grapes cooked for too long and some were way too burnt to include on the sandwich, so my grape to chickpea ratio was a bit off :(.

7. Spread the second piece of bread with coconut oil on one side and the jelly or jam on the second side.  Place this slice of bread onto the first slice of bread with the coconut oil side facing up.

8. Cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden brown.

And, as always, ensure that you cut the sandwich on a diagonal ;).

It is no secret that I am a big fan of the sweet and savory combination, and that is exactly what you get with this grilled sandwich.  Roasted chickpeas are absolutely amazing on their own (yes, I eat chickpeas as a snack ;)), but adding them to the sweet combination of peanut butter and jelly is beyond amazing.  The sweetness of the grapes nicely compliments the savory taste of the chickpeas, too!  Seriously, this combination is to. die. for.

Oh, and if the taste of this sandwich alone is not enough, it is also PACKED with protein!  My Sweet and Savory Grilled PB & J Sandwich clocked in at about 20 grams of protein.

Trust me when I say that I have absolutely no issue with eating a “kid-friendly” sandwich.  However, being able to eat a more “adult” version of this classic favorite made for a nice change.  Please try to tell me that savory and crunchy roasted chickpeas, melted peanut butter, and sweet grapes and jam on perfectly toasted bread do not sound good to you.  If you love the sweet and savory combination half as much as I do, then this is a sandwich that you need to add to your “to make” list ASAP :).

Definitely interesting! I'm a huge fan of chickpeas, so I can see how this could be quite delicious. What a creative idea!

This is so creative! I'm not a big fan of jelly but like the idea of using grapes. Adding chick peas, what a great idea for lots of added protein

I've just hopped on the chickpeas band wagon, what a creative use of them! I think the way you feel about PB&J is how I feel about open faced grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato. It's fun to reminisce on the food mom used to make :)
  • jumpeatrun May 7, 2013, 7:19 pm
That sounds super interesting! I like all of the ingredients, so I may have to give it a try :)

One of the dining halls at my school had a PB&J bar with all different kinds of peanut butter, jelly, and extra fixings. It was the greatest thing ever. I've never thought of grilling the sandwich before - brilliant!

That is such a great idea! I would love to try it!

Hmmm... I absolutely love grilled peanut butter sandwiches but chickpeas??! I'll have to give it a try. I'm sure it is delicious but I would have never thought to add in that ingredient!
  • kathysteger May 7, 2013, 10:11 pm
Intriguing. Love pb, love chickpeas. Sure why not. :)
  • Ashley @ AlmostVegGirlie May 7, 2013, 10:53 pm
I love different takes on the classic PB&J and your version looks really good! I made a version the other day that was homemade blueberry chia jam with cashew butter and coconut chips and it was delicious.
  • ahealthyhappyhome May 7, 2013, 10:54 pm
That sounds so interesting but good! I love any form of nut butter but am actually doing a little detox from all nuts. Realizing I eat way too many and seeing how my body reacts. Don't think I can give them up forever though!

  • organicgellygelica May 8, 2013, 12:57 am
This looks delish! Love the chickpea usage. I've never met a chickpea recipe I didn't like.
  • Lucie@FitSwissChick May 8, 2013, 3:37 am
Oh so yummy! I am all about sweet and savory. Not long a go I baked cookies with chickpeas and dates, they were so good!
  • Jan @ Sprouts n Squats May 8, 2013, 3:46 am
Yum this looks good. I'd have to ditch the chickpeas cause I can't eat them but everything else sounds yum as a combo!
  • Kelly @ Hidden Fruits and Veggies May 8, 2013, 7:56 am
I've never actually roasted chickpeas, I just open the can and use em. Does it make them that much better? I can't get Josh to touch them, so any way to improve them and maybe get htem in his belly would be a win!

  • Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie May 8, 2013, 8:57 am
I love the savory and sweet combo! And this looks awesome, so fancy :)
  • megbek May 8, 2013, 9:14 am
Interesting to add the chickpeas to that. I read the ingredients and was like what?!!? But, I think they'd be yummy in this concoction! So creative, lady! I must roast some chickpeas immediately. Nice way of getting protein (not eating meat takes away so much of that naturally!).
  • blonde hair blue eyed runner May 8, 2013, 9:27 am
This oddly sounds pretty darn good. I love toasted pb and jam, soo yummy!
  • Robyn May 8, 2013, 9:57 am
ok I love a good grilled sandwich, and grilled PB&Js are in my top Fave...but adding chickpeas huh...now that is new to me...but since I love me some chickpeas I could totally see myself loving this
  • Alyssa @ Road to RD May 8, 2013, 10:20 am
Interesting combo! I may have to give this a shot when I go home, seeing as how chick peas are one of my favorite foods!
  • Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen May 8, 2013, 11:14 am
This is fabulous. First, because roasted grapes are one of the most underrated delicious ways of serving fruit. Second, I loved putting potato chips on peanut butter sandwiches, and this seems like a great way to get some crunch...but in a healthier way. THEN you went and grilled it! Love.
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl May 8, 2013, 8:14 pm
Thank you! Yes, the sweet and savory combo is awesome, and it definitely has that salty kick, which I find to be SO tasty!
  • Dana @ Conscious Kitchen Blog May 8, 2013, 11:57 am
Such an interesting combination! I'd never thought to put chickpeas and grapes together. Thanks for sharing!
  • makingthymeforhealth May 8, 2013, 12:49 pm
I saw grilled pb&j on your comment love and immediately had to bring myself here. Ugh, it sounds so good!! And the chickpeas and grapes are a very creative touch. I actually asked a question on my blog about whether or not people prefer plain peanut butter or pb and jelly. The majority said plain peanut butter!! They're crazy! ;)
  • jessiebearwhat May 8, 2013, 1:45 pm
whoa, definitely the most unique pb and j I've ever seen!
  • Dixya @ Food, Pleasure, and Health May 8, 2013, 2:13 pm
PBJ never gets old!!! I need to try this combo ASAP!
  • Alex @ Cookie Dough Katzen May 8, 2013, 2:44 pm
What a unique combo! My favorite thing to add to a pb&j sandwich is apples and granolla. So good!
  • Anna Smith-James (@AnnaTheApple88) May 8, 2013, 3:05 pm
Ahh-mazing. I adore sweet and savoury combo. I love this variation of the tradition sandwich. I imagine it has a great texture too. Yum.
  • Brittany May 8, 2013, 7:08 pm
Chickpeas and grapes!? UHH YES please!! This looks SO good.
  • Oh My Veggies (@ohmyveggies) May 8, 2013, 7:42 pm
A savory PB&J?! That is an awesome idea. Regular PB&Js are a little bit TOO sweet for me now, so balancing it out with some savory is perfect. :)
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl May 8, 2013, 8:17 pm
This definitely has that added salty and savory twist, which balances out the sweetness nicely.
  • IHeartVegetables May 8, 2013, 7:50 pm
Haha this sparked a debate with my brother about grilled peanut butter and jelly. I think it could be good, but I've never tried it!
    • cleaneatingveggiegirl May 8, 2013, 8:17 pm
Well, I would say that you need to try it! Grilled PB & J's are awesome because the peanut butter gets super melted and tasty :).

Thank you!! I hope you find some recipes that you like! :) And I am actually from Iowa, not Kansas. But I definitely still feel tied to Kansas because of school. I did my Master's degree entirely online, though, so I did not live in Kansas.

this looks like such an interesting combo! i've done grilled pb and honey before so i'm curious to try this with the chickpeas and grapes. sweet and savory is the best.
