Eating Gluten-Free in Breckenridge and Denver, Colorado {Part 2}

in Other, Restaurant Reviews

Disclaimer: I do not have Celiac disease and, therefore, was not overly concerned regarding possible cross-contamination when making my selections at the following restaurants.  If you have Celiac disease, I certainly recommend asking the appropriate questions of your server regarding “GF-marked” items.

When we last left off, us girls had just driven to Breckenridge to meet the guys for a day in the mountains.  We spent Monday evening and Tuesday soaking up the mountains, eating more delicious food, and walking throughout the cutest little Main Street ever.  And I managed to do it all while keeping things gluten-free.

Eating Gluten-Free in Breckenridge and Denver, Colorado

Breckenridge_ColoradoWe arrived to our hotel, The Lodge at Breckenridge, in the late afternoon.  It was a really cute and quaint hotel with the most amazing views.  The only downside?  No air conditioning.  I had not even thought to check on something like that, but from now on I definitely will.  Most months out of the year it is probably no big deal, but we happened to be there during a hot spell.  Would I stay there again in the cooler months?  Absolutely.  But it probably would not be my top choice during the summer months.

Mi_Casa_Breckenridge_ColoradoAfter we checked in and got settled, we decided on Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant & Cantina for dinner.  Mexican food sounded delicious, and they had an extensive gluten-free menu.  They even asked if I had Celiac disease when I requested the menu, which is generally pretty unusual for most restaurants.

Jeremy Hannah BreckenridgeMy cute date and I loved the outdoor seating right next to a little river.  It was the perfect atmosphere.

Mi_Casa_Breckenridge_Colorado_MargaritaWe started things off with margaritas because: vacation.  I went with a classic since I genuinely just love a good lime margarita.

Mi_Casa_Breckenridge_Colorado_Chips_SalsaEven though I do not have Celiac disease, I really appreciated how attentive they were to my gluten-free requests.  They brought me gluten-free chips (they were just Tostitos, but still so good) and my own bowls of salsa.  I had a hard time picking a favorite salsa, but I think the tomatillo version would win if I had to choose.

Mi_Casa_Breckenridge_Colorado_Chorizo_ChickenI splurged a bit on dinner because one of the house specialties sounded so good.  And after the waitress told me that it was her favorite menu item, I had to get it.  I ordered the Chorizo Stuffed Chicken Breast.  It was topped with a habanero cream sauce and served alongside grilled zucchini and a sweet corn gratin.  It was definitely spicy, but everything was so good.  I shared a couple of bites with Jeremy and then cleaned my plate.

Carmen Tyler Jeremy HannahThe four of us thoroughly enjoyed the drinks, food, and service at Mi Casa.  I would definitely go back again.

Jeremy Hannah Breckenridge 2After a nearly sleepless night due to the heat, stuffy noses, and snoring (ahem, Jeremy), we woke up and got moving after a stop by the hotel’s continental breakfast.  One of my favorite things to do in Breckenridge is to walk along Main Street and check out all of the shops, restaurants, and bakeries.

Hannah Breckenridge FishI also always have to make a stop by the river to feed the fish.

Jeremy Hannah Breckenridge 4It felt so weird to be in warm weather while there was still tons of snow on the mountains in the background.  But how gorgeous is this view?

Canteen_Breckenridge_ColoradoAfter we spent a couple of hours browsing and feeding, we split up for lunch.  Jeremy and I decided to eat at The Canteen Tap House and Tavern.  I saw that they had several gluten-free items on their menu, and I was so excited to finally be able to try my first bowl of Colorado pork green chile.

Spam_Canteen_Breckenridge_ColoradoWe started things off with something a bit different.  Yes, that is Spam.  Your first reaction might be, “why?”  But when we saw it on the menu, we knew that it was a must-try.  The combination of grilled teriyaki spam, white rice, nori, daikon radish sprouts, and sriracha sounded like something we couldn’t pass up.  I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone, and I am so glad that we did.  I can absolutely see why it was listed as a Hawaiian favorite.

Green_Chili_Canteen_Breckenridge_ColoradoOnce our “fancy” Spam was eaten, my delicious Pork Green Chile soup arrived.  It was topped with cheese and sour cream, and was served alongside housemade chips.  While it may have been a bit of a dairy overload, it was insanely delicious.  I now understand why the people in Colorado are crazy about their pork green chile.

Marys_Mountain_Cookies_BreckenridgeWe finished off our time in Breckenridge with stops at a few more shops and Mary’s Mountain Cookies bakery.

Marys_Mountain_Cookies_Breckenridge 2I was so stinkin’ thrilled when I saw that they had a gluten-free option and that it was not just your traditional chocolate chip cookie.  How could I pass up this double-chocolate coconut crunch cookie?

Hannah CookieI was still full from lunch, but made sure to open up my cookie bag as soon as we arrived back to Denver.  I was a nice fiancée (that is still weird to say) and shared it with Jeremy.  I totally could have eaten it all by myself.

At this point, we were all pretty tired, so we lounged around the house for a while before heading to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for their Film on the Rocks event.  After a quick rainstorm, the skies cleared and we enjoyed meat, cheese, crackers, carrots, popcorn, and plantain chips with guac all while watching Jurassic Park outdoors at the most beautiful venue.  If you ever get the chance to go to an event at Red Rocks, you must grab it.  It is unlike anything that I have ever experienced before.  I have seen two movies there, and someday I hope to add a concert to my list.

That’s a wrap for Breckenridge and Red Rocks.  Be sure to check out my first Denver recap below and catch my third recap next week!

I try my best to be relatable! When it comes to vacation, I try not to sweat the small stuff too much. It's only one week out of the whole year, so I keep things healthy when I can (breakfasts, etc.) and splurge a bit on the rest!
